- Do Compression Garments Work? The Science of Performance & Recovery | Wave Company
< Back Do Compression Garments Work? The Science of Performance & Recovery In the world of athletic performance, every advantage counts. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts constantly seek methods to train harder, perform stronger, and recover faster. Compression athleisure has become an ubiquitous part of the modern athlete's wardrobe. But what does the science say? Is there a measurable link between wearing compression garments and achieving better athletic outcomes? By examining recent scientific studies, we can deconstruct marketing claims and understand the physiological mechanisms at play. The consensus suggests a clear, nuanced correlation between compression wear and specific aspects of athletic performance and recovery. The Immediate Impact: Small but Significant Gains The theory behind compression wear is straightforward: applying mechanical pressure to the limbs is believed to enhance performance and expedite recovery. A comprehensive 2023 meta-analysis published in Applied Sciences synthesized data from 42 separate studies to quantify these effects. The researchers found that wearing compression sportswear led to statistically significant, though small, improvements in three key areas: Speed Endurance Functional motor performance (Lee et al., 2023) This finding suggests that the immediate effect of wearing compression during exercise isn't a placebo; it's a tangible enhancement. However, the benefits are not universal across all activities. The same meta-analysis failed to find significant improvements in power, strength, or specific sport-related performances. This indicates the effects are targeted rather than all-encompassing (Lee et al., 2023). Who Benefits Most? It Depends on the Goal. Delving deeper, the performance advantages of compression appear to be specific to the athlete's training level and their specific goals. For Speed, Elite Athletes See the Edge: The 2023 meta-analysis identified that elite athletes, in particular, reaped significant benefits in speed-related tasks (Lee et al., 2023). This may be due to factors such as: Increased biomechanical efficiency Enhanced proprioception (the body's awareness of its position in space) These factors are crucial for explosive, coordinated movements. For elite performers, even a marginal gain can be the difference between winning and losing. For Endurance, Moderately Trained Individuals Improve: Interestingly, the greatest endurance benefits were seen not in elite athletes, but in "moderately trained" adults. This group also saw significant gains in functional motor performance (Lee et al., 2023). The proposed mechanism is that these individuals have more room for physiological improvement. The enhanced blood flow and reduced muscle oscillation provided by compression gear may offer a more substantial benefit to them compared to highly trained athletes whose bodies have already adapted to a high level of stress (Lee et al., 2023). The Science of Recovery: Mitigating Muscle Fatigue and Damage Perhaps the most robust evidence for compression wear lies in its role in post-exercise recovery. Strenuous activity causes exercise-induced muscle fatigue, a temporary and reversible decline in the ability of muscles to produce force. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in the journal Life investigated this area. It concluded that compression garments significantly mitigate the decline in both muscle strength and power after fatiguing exercise (Li et al., 2025). The mechanisms behind this are multifaceted: Enhanced Circulation and Waste Removal: Compression garments improve muscle pump function, which enhances blood circulation and venous return. This increased blood flow helps to more efficiently clear metabolic byproducts associated with muscle damage (Li et al., 2025). Reduced Muscle Oscillation: During high-impact activities like running, muscles vibrate. Compression garments help to stabilize the muscle and reduce this oscillation, which is thought to reduce mechanical damage and micro-trauma to muscle fibers (Lee et al., 2023). One study noted that compression pants helped reduce injuries by minimizing these muscle oscillations (Halász et al., 2021). Alleviated Soreness and Swelling: By applying pressure, compression garments can help reduce post-exercise muscle swelling and attenuate the inflammatory response, which are key contributors to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) (Li et al., 2025). The 2025 review found these recovery benefits were most pronounced for lower-limb garments and were significant for both trained and untrained individuals (Li et al., 2025). Specifically, the positive effects on muscle strength were observable at rest intervals of 1-48 hours and over 72 hours post-exercise, highlighting both immediate and long-term recovery advantages (Li et al., 2025). The Verdict: A Strategic Tool, Not a Magic Bullet The scientific evidence clearly supports the use of compression athleisure, but it's crucial to approach it as a strategic tool rather than a cure-all. The data indicates that wearing compression garments can provide small but meaningful improvements in speed and endurance and can significantly aid in the recovery process by mitigating muscle strength and power loss post-exercise. The benefits appear to be most pronounced for: Athletes seeking speed enhancements. Moderately active individuals looking to boost their endurance. Lower-body garments, in particular, show strong evidence for improving both endurance and recovery (Lee et al., 2023; Li et al., 2025). For any athlete looking to optimize their performance and accelerate recovery, the science suggests that incorporating compression wear is a valid, evidence-based strategy. It won't transform an amateur into a professional overnight, but it can provide a tangible edge in the pursuit of peak performance. - Impact of EMS and Compression Clothing on Muscle Strength and Activity | Wave Company
< Back Impact of EMS and Compression Clothing on Muscle Strength and Activity To evaluate how wearable technology can enhance physical performance, researchers at Dankook University conducted a study on the effects of EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) combined with compression clothing. The goal: to understand how this combination influences muscle strength, activity, and fatigue in the elbow and knee joints. Methodology: The study involved ten healthy male adults between the ages of 20 and 30. Each participant completed three separate trials: one without any special clothing (control), one wearing only compression garments, and one wearing compression garments integrated with EMS. After each trial, the participants’ isokinetic muscle strength and muscle activity were measured at two angular velocities: 60°/sec (targeting maximum strength) and 180°/sec (targeting muscular endurance. Muscle activity was tracked using surface electromyography (EMG) in key muscle groups; specifically, the biceps brachii, quadriceps femoris, and biceps femoris, while strength and power output were recorded using the Cybex HUMAC NORM system. Fatigue was measured via fatigue index, offering insights into how quickly muscles tired under each condition. EMS Combined with Compression Outperforms in Every Category Across all metrics, the EMS + compression clothing condition consistently led to the most pronounced improvements. From muscle activation to power output and endurance, this combination outperformed both the control and compression-only conditions. Isokinetic Muscle Strength: Measurable Gains When evaluating maximum torque during elbow flexion and extension at 60°/sec, the EMS + compression group achieved significantly higher values than the other two groups. Elbow flexors, for instance, peaked at 74.70 Nm/kg in the EMS + compression condition, over 10 Nm/kg higher than the control. Similar trends were observed in the knee joint, where peak torque for knee flexors reached 165 Nm/kg with EMS + compression, compared to 141 Nm/kg in the control group. At 180°/sec, a speed designed to evaluate endurance and sustained output, EMS + compression clothing again came out on top. Average power and total work were highest in this group for both elbow and knee joints, indicating not just stronger but longer-lasting performance. For example, average power in the elbow flexors reached 81.50 W/kg with EMS + compression, compared to just 61.30 W/kg in the control condition. Similar trends are observed when conducting tests on the knee joint area. Compression & EMS + compression clothing showed higher results in maximum strength and flexion and extension, there were no significant differences in knee joint strength was higher in the compression and EMS combines groups than the control group Muscle Activity (EMG): Stronger Signals, Greater Recruitment Muscle activity was measured via EMG in the same key muscle groups. EMS combined with compression clothing consistently produced the highest muscle activation across all measured regions. In the elbow, the biceps brachii reached an average of 399.22 µV with EMS + compression, compared to 308.51 µV in the control group. The quadriceps femoris showed a similar increase, peaking at 695.56 µV, nearly 90 µV higher than the control. These elevated values reflect stronger neuromuscular signals, increased muscle fiber recruitment, and greater overall activation, confirming that the EMS-enhanced garments are not merely supportive but actively performance-enhancing. Fatigue: A Tradeoff Worth Considering At the slower angular velocity (60°/sec), fatigue index readings revealed an expected side effect of higher performance: greater fatigue. In elbow extensors, the EMS + compression group registered a fatigue index of 14.3, compared to just 8.2 in the control. However, in other muscle groups such as the flexors, EMS + compression actually reduced fatigue, suggesting improved muscular efficiency in those areas. Power and Total Work : Dominance at High Speed At the higher testing speed of 180°/sec, which simulates more dynamic athletic movement, the EMS + compression group again showed clear superiority. For instance, total work done by the knee extensors reached 2,752 Nm/kg, significantly higher than both the compression-only (2,284 Nm/kg) and control (1,961 Nm/kg) conditions. These findings confirm that the addition of EMS doesn’t just offer peak performance but also sustained output under high-load conditions. Statistical Significance & Implications The study’s findings were backed by repeated measures ANOVA, confirming statistically significant improvements in multiple categories for the EMS + compression group. These included muscle activity, average power, and peak torque, particularly in the flexors and extensors of both elbow and knee joints. While the higher fatigue index in certain areas reflects the increased demands placed on the body, the tradeoff is a clear performance edge; valuable for athletes, physical therapists, and anyone seeking measurable gains in strength and endurance. This study offers compelling evidence that EMS-enhanced compression wear isn’t just hype; it’s a validated approach to improving muscle activation, increasing power, and enhancing endurance. Whether you're designing products for high-performance athletes or therapeutic use, integrating EMS into compression garments represents a meaningful leap forward in wearable sports science.
